Ford House Hosts Community Appreciation Day on April 11

Once a Year, Ford House Offers Free Admission to Everyone. Here's Why That Matters.

Ford House free admission sounds like a headline that deserves a second read. But every spring, Ford House does exactly that: opens its gates at no cost to anyone who wants to walk through them. This year, Community Appreciation Day falls on Saturday, April 11, 2026, and if you’ve never been to Ford House before, there has never been a better reason to come.

What Community Appreciation Day Is

Community Appreciation Day is Ford House’s annual tradition of welcoming people who might not otherwise visit. No ticket price, no barrier, no catch. You can choose a free House & Grounds Pass, which gets you onto the property and into the Main Residence for a self-paced exploration, or a free Grounds Pass if you’d rather spend the day outside in the gardens and along the waterfront.

Last year, more than 2,200 people visited Ford House for the very first time during Community Appreciation Day. That number matters to us. It means 2,200 people who drove past this estate for years, maybe their whole lives, finally came inside. We hope this year brings just as many.

What You'll See This Spring

The estate’s 87 acres look different every season, and April is one of the most rewarding times to visit. The gardens are waking up, the lake is open and bright, and the grounds feel alive in a way that’s hard to describe until you’re standing in the middle of it.

This spring, visitors will also notice something new along the shoreline. Ford House is currently in the midst of the Lower Lake St. Clair Habitat Restoration Project, a partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) made possible through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The project is restoring native habitat along the estate’s Lake St. Clair waterfront, and while you’ll see active equipment and earthmoving rather than a finished landscape, it’s a meaningful piece of Ford House history in the making.

Inside, the Visitor Center is home to two exhibitions worth your time. The Ford Family Story traces the lives of Edsel and Eleanor Ford and the legacy they left behind. The second, Wish You Were Here: Unpacking Ford Family Travel, is the estate’s latest exhibition and offers a fascinating look at how the Ford family experienced the world beyond Grosse Pointe Shores.

Make a Day of It

Community Appreciation Day is a natural excuse to linger. The Shop at Ford House carries a thoughtful selection of gifts, books, and items connected to the estate’s history and collections. And while dining at The Continental is not included with free admission, the restaurant is open, and April is a wonderful time to explore the spring menu. Reservations are recommended and can be made at fordhouse.org/dining/.

How to Register

Admission is free, but registration is recommended to help ensure a smooth experience for everyone. Visit fordhouse.org/events/community-appreciation-day/ to choose your pass and reserve your spot. The event runs all day on Saturday, April 11, 2026.

If you’ve been meaning to visit Ford House for the first time, this is your day. We’ll see you on April 11!
