Ford Cove
Ford Cove is where the estate meets the water, and it is the view that visitors remember longest.
This sheltered inlet on Lake St. Clair sits at the base of the estate’s grounds, accessible by a short walk from the Main Residence along paths that wind through the landscape Jens Jensen designed. The cove was Edsel Ford’s launching point for his boats on the lake. Standing at the water’s edge today, with the Main Residence visible through the trees above, it is easy to understand why the Fords chose this particular stretch of shoreline to build their home.
Ford Cove sits at the junction of several of the estate’s most important features. Bird Island is accessible by the footbridge just to the east. The Power House stands nearby along the shoreline. The paths leading back toward the Rose Garden and Formal Garden begin their climb from here.
Ford Cove is accessible with any Ford House admission ticket and is open during estate hours. It is a destination in any season, though the view across the water in fall, when the trees along the shore are at peak color, is particularly worth seeking out.
